Eckford Sweet Peas is a climbing plant developed by Mr. Eckford in the
19th century.
Born in Stenhouse, Scotland, in 1823, Mr Eckford spent much of his
career as a gardener on various estates in Scotland and England.

In 1870, when Mr Eckford was a gardener at Sandiwell in Gloucester, he
began experimenting with plant breeding and about 10 years later work began on
the development of sweet peas.
In 1888 he moved to Wen, where he founded the Eckford Nursery and
continued the development of his factory.
They continue work 17 years until death in December 1905, and this year
received the Victoria Medal of Honor and he from the Royal Horticultural
Society.
Wem continued to connect with Mr. Eckford and his sweet peas and until
recently held a festival to celebrate plants.
But support for the factory continued, with Mayor and Councillor Peter
Bloomhall attending the opening of an exhibition on Mr. Bloomhall's life and
times. Eckford on weekends.
In Mr. Eckford's honor, the exhibition will be on display for a week, Keller Bloomhall said.
