Born in Stenhouse, Scotland, in 1823, Mr Eckford spent much of his career as a gardener on various estates in Scotland and England.

In 1870, when Mr Eckford was a gardener at Sandiwell in Gloucester, he began experimenting with plant breeding and about 10 years later work began on the development of sweet peas.

They continue work 17 years until death in December 1905, and this year received the Victoria Medal of Honor and he from the Royal Horticultural Society.
